Free sun report

See how the sun moves around your home

See when direct sun reaches each side of your house, on any day of the year. It's built from the City of Calgary's 3D buildings, trees and streets, so your neighbours' houses and trees are included. Try the example below, then enter your address.

How the sun report works

Calgary's sun moves a long way through the year. In June it rises in the northeast around 5:20 am and sets in the northwest close to 10 pm, so even north walls get early and late sun. In December it stays low in the south for about eight hours. Which windows need glare control, privacy or a darker bedroom depends on which way they face and what stands around them.

Your house and your neighbours

Building outlines and heights come from the City's LiDAR survey. Houses get an estimated gable roof, so a neighbour's roof shades your wall the way it really would. Each wall is split into 18 cells, three across and six from the ground to the eaves.

Trees, in and out of leaf

City-mapped street trees are sized from their trunk and species, and backyard trees come from the City's tree canopy map. Evergreens shade all year. Leafy trees block most sun from late May to early October and let about half through when bare.

Slopes and hills

The ground rises and falls with the elevations the City records at each building, so a house below a slope loses the low sun sooner than one on flat ground.

What it can't see

Window positions, roof overhangs, fences, clouds and trees planted after 2022 aren't included, and tree heights are estimates. Add a missing tree yourself, and we check everything in person at your consultation.

Your address goes only to the City of Calgary's open data service to look up the buildings and trees around it. Voss Blinds doesn't store it. Sun positions are calculated with SunCalc in Calgary local time.
